Fiberglass and Paint

by Chesapeake Nautical

Chesapeake Nautical specializes in providing high-quality boat paint and fiberglass repair services for a variety of marine vessels.

One of our recent projects involved a comprehensive recore job on a deck that was significantly affected by rot and delamination, common issues that can compromise the structural integrity of a boat.

Upon assessing the deck, we identified that the balsa wood core, particularly located under the mast step, was severely deteriorated. Balsa wood, while lightweight and buoyant, is susceptible to moisture intrusion, which can lead to rot over time, especially in areas where water can accumulate or where the sealant has degraded. This deterioration not only weakens the deck but can also lead to further damage if not addressed promptly.

To begin the repair process, we meticulously removed the compromised balsa wood core. This involved carefully cutting out the affected sections without causing additional damage to the surrounding fiberglass layers. Our team ensured that the area was clean and free from any remnants of the rotted material to create a solid foundation for the new core.

Once the old material was removed, we proceeded to replace the balsa wood with solid fiberglass, a more durable and moisture-resistant alternative. Solid fiberglass offers superior strength and longevity, helping to prevent future issues related to rot and delamination. The installation of the new fiberglass core involved layering and bonding techniques that ensured a strong and seamless integration with the existing deck structure.

After the replacement was complete, we took the necessary steps to finish the deck with high-quality marine-grade boat paint and sealants. This not only provided an aesthetically pleasing appearance but also added an extra layer of protection against the elements, further safeguarding the repair.

By choosing to implement solid fiberglass instead of balsa wood, we effectively eliminated the risks associated with moisture damage, ensuring that the deck would remain robust and reliable for years to come. This project exemplifies Chesapeake Nautical's commitment to delivering durable solutions that enhance the longevity and performance of our clients' vessels.
